Tierra Chiloé Hotel and Spa is currently doubling in size due to the increasing number of visitors. During the 2016-2017 season we will welcome guests between 1st November 2016 and 15th March 2017 with a special one-time only rate for this period. All the facilities of the hotel will function normally and all the excursions will operate as usual. Located in the blue waters of Chile’s Northern Patagonia, this mystical island is dotted with fishing villages and will warm hearts with its culture and timeless traditions. In true Tierra style, the lodge’s distinctive architecture is in-step with its breathtaking surroundings and comes complete with its own boat the “Williche” to navigate the inland waters, ocean, channels and fjords.

The hotel has a team of guides offering a handful of tailored half day and full day outings. The day trips are designed to allow guests to discover the culture and nature of the Archipelago. There are a variety of outings including cultural trips, boating, horseback riding, cycling, trekking and nature observation. This provides our guests with the opportunity to visit the unique sites and to comprehend and appreciate this wonderful archipelago, Chiloé.

By Sea

Chonchi – Quehui

Duration: 6 or 7 hours  Level of Difficulty: Easy

We will travel by van to the village of Chonchi, where we will take a walking tour of the historical neighbourhood. This visit also includes the old local museum, the church (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and the waterfront. We will then board our vessel Williche, en route to the islands of Lemuy, Chelin and Quehui.We will then return to the hotel via boat.

 Mechuque Island

Duration: 6 or 7 hours  Level of Difficulty: Easy

We will depart by van en route the village of Tenaún for a tour of the town. From there we will board the Williche and sail to Mechuque Island, where we will tour the inner channels to admire the small islands and isles. Afterwards, we will take a walking tour of Mechuque village and return to the hotel via boat.

By Land

Quinchao Island

Duration: 6 hours  Level of Difficulty: Easy

We will take a short trip by van to the village of Dalcahue, where we will board a ferry to cross the channel over to the island of Quinchao. On the island we will visit some churches that have been declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites, as well as several famous villages such as Curaco de Velez, Achao, and other smaller attractive towns such as Quinchao and San Javier. During the trip we have a variety of special stops with the opportunity to see attractions such as scenic overlooks of the countryside and ocean, as well as Chiloé architecture. We will also have the chance to learn about the local crafts and history, along with other surprises. We will witness one more panoramic view of that side of the archipelago before we begin our trip back to the hotel.

Rilán

Duration: 3 hours  Level of Difficulty: Easy

We will travel by van to the village of Rilán where we will see the local church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Before arriving at the church, we will wind in and out of inland roads that have gorgeous views of the archipelago and other small villages, such as Curahue, Quel-Quel and Yutuy, providing us with a close glimpse of local culture.

Castro

Duration: 3 hours  Level of Difficulty: Easy

We will travel by van to Castro, the capital of Chiloé, a welcoming and vibrant city where the past and present meld together. We will visit the main square, a church declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a typical country market with hand crafts and of course, witness the scenic overlooks and the classic view of the Chiloé stilt houses (Palafitos). Before returning to the hotel, we will stop at the village of Nercón, where we will get to see another UNESCO World Heritage Site church under reconstruction and nearby, the mastery of local carpenters at one of the coastal shipyards.

Dos Lagos

Duration: 6 or 7 hours  Level of Difficulty: Easy

  • Rain boots and gear required.

We will head southbound to the Chiloé National Park, near Lake Cucao, where we can walk along the forest trails that are lined with Tepu trees and views of the Pacific Ocean. On the return trip we will stop by Lake Huillinco and visit the Vilupulli Church (UNESCO World Heritage Site).

Las Compuertas Forest

Duration 3 hours  Level of Difficulty: Easy – Moderate

  • Rain boots and gear required.

We will head to the northwest where we will step into one of the densest forests in all of Chiloé. The change in landscape is radical and we will soon be surrounded by trees and rivers. This trek will take us along a stream bed, where we will have the opportunity to enjoy a forest full of different species of ancient trees, moss and birds.

Horseback Riding

San José

Duration: 2 or 3 hours  Level of Difficulty: Easy – Moderate

Departing from the hotel we will take the trail leading to the northern end of the beach, taking advantage of low tide and enjoying an incredible view of the inland sea, typical Chiloé farmhouses, washed up tree trunks and rookeries. We will then ride onward to the town of San José for about an hour before reaching the local chapel, and then head back down to the hotel.

Quilquico

Duration: 2 or 3 hours  Level of Difficulty: Easy – Moderate

Departing from the hotel we will take the trail leading to the southern end of the beach. This trail will take us very close to the Pullao wetlands where we may have the chance to do some migratory bird watching. Further on we will arrive at the local blacksmith’s house, where we can see some tools and instruments typically used in Chiloé to work the land. From there we will ride up the trail while enjoying wide panoramic view, ending up in the village of Quilquico. After winding along several inland trails and crossing over fields, we will return to the hotel.

In Van and Boat: Chepu

Duration: 6 hours  Level of Difficulty: Easy – Moderate

We will depart by van from the Tierra Chiloé Hotel & Spa headed northbound, crossing Chiloé fields until we reach the Chepu river, where we will take a local boat cruise to admire an underwater forest. We will then embark on a slightly difficult trek overlooking the Pacific Ocean before returning to the hotel.
